Abandoned fish farms get new life at Oceanize

Four fish farming cages that have been abandoned on the Helgeland coast for at least 15 years have now been retrieved and will be given new life through recycling at Oceanize, the Directorate of Fisheries writes in a press release.

The cages were picked up by the Directorate of Fisheries after a tip that they were lying around carelessly and were poorly secured. After cleaning, they were handed over to Helgeland Plast, which will arrange for further transport to Oceanize.

Here, the plastic material from the old cages will be processed and recycled into raw materials that can be used in new products and components. This will transform the material from being marine waste and a potential risk to the environment and maritime traffic, to becoming a valuable resource in a new cycle.

Oceanize has extensive experience in receiving, dismantling and recycling discarded fish farming cages from the aquaculture industry. The plastic material is processed at the facility in Nærøysund and turned into recycled plastic granules that can be used in the production of new plastic products.

The project is a good example of what is possible when authorities, municipalities and industry players work together. Plastic that has been in the way for years is cleaned up, taken care of and returned to the cycle.
