From scrapped ropework to rock protection in Norwegian tunnels. Together with Pla-Mek and Saferoad Vik Ørsta, Oceanize won the award for Teamwork of the Year at the IDC Awards 2026.
The award, which was presented at the Løvenvold Theater in Ålesund on Thursday, was won after many years of good cooperation between the three companies on the CT bolt. The CT bolt is a rock securing bolt for tunnels where granulate made from recycled rope from Norwegian aquaculture and fisheries is one of the plastic components. The project shows how collaboration across companies can contribute to innovative solutions, reduced climate footprint and increased resource utilization.
Oceanize sorts, grinds and washes PP and PE ropes from aquaculture and fisheries. The plastic is then melted into granules that are quality tested in the laboratory. At Pla-Mek, the granules are used as raw material in the production of injection tubes for the CT bolt. The material is processed in an extruder and further processed into technical plastic components.
Saferoad Vik Ørsta assembles the pipes using corrugated steel from Mo i Rana, which is first hot-dip galvanized and painted at the production facility in Ørsta. The bolts are then packaged and shipped to tunnel projects.
Old rope that would otherwise have become waste is thus given a new use inside the mountain. At the same time, calculations show that the environmental benefits are significant. In 2024 alone, the recycled plastic from Oceanize contributed to 183 tons of lower CO₂ emissions, according to figures from Energiråd AS.
– We are proud to win this together with Pla-Mek and Saferoad Vik Ørsta. This is yet another example of what used ropes from the aquaculture and fishing industry can be used for, and that sustainability and innovation go hand in hand, says Dagfinn Hammer at Oceanize.
At the initiative of Pla-Mek, the three companies have also joined forces to develop joint campaign materials and market the innovative solution. The collaboration thus encompasses the entire value chain, from collection and recycling of ropes to the finished product and marketing.
