Should the cage be phased out? Oceanize wants the plastic

“One of the most important tasks we do is collect discarded fish farming cages. We cut up and dismantle the facility, transport the plastic to our facility on Ottersøy in Nærøysund, where we make granules that are used in new plastic products,” says Geir Emil Westrum, sales manager at Oceanize.

From cage to new raw material

Oceanize has a large processing capacity for hard plastic, and accepts, among other things, rings, float collars, feed hoses and PE pipes from fish farmers throughout Norway. Customers can deliver the plastic themselves or have Oceanize collect the plastic. This is easily done via our website, and we will then contact you to clarify how the discarded equipment will be dismantled, sorted and transported.

“We do not require that the cages be cleaned, although washing and scraping is an advantage in further production. The most important thing is that there is sufficient area to pull the rings ashore, load and temporarily store the pipes,” says Westrum.

For onshore dismantling, an area is needed with space to pull up the cage, temporarily store pipes and provide access for trucks and machinery. Oceanize can also retrieve cages and feed hoses directly from the sea.

SalMar has seen what happens to plastic

A 160-meter cage can contain around 18 tons of plastic. The amount varies with the pipe dimension and type of clamp. At Oceanize's facility, suitable plastic is sorted and granulated into raw material that can be used in new plastic products, including new cages and feed pipes. SalMar has delivered scrapped cages and other plastic equipment to Oceanize. Roger Eiternes from SalMar has visited the facility and seen what is done to protect the plastic after it is collected.

– We got a proper overview of the entire process and got to see what happens to the plastic waste. It is useful and interesting for us to see how discarded cages can be reused for other purposes. For SalMar, this is very important. We have a strong focus on the environment and recycling, these are also things we are measured on. In that respect, Oceanize's work is invaluable. This is sustainability in practice, says Eiternes.

He also highlights the collaboration on practical solutions:

– We are very happy with how Oceanize adapts and finds solutions that work for everyone. They are very flexible. Whether something needs to be picked up on Sunday or Wednesday, it comes out almost the same.

It's that easy to unsubscribe

You can register via the simple registration form at oceanize.no/registringsskjema , or contact Geir Emil Westrum at geir@oceanize.no or 950 14 110.

– If you have a cage, feed hoses or PE pipes that need to be disposed of, please state the type of plastic, approximate quantity, where it is located and whether you would like help with dismantling or transport. This will allow us to more quickly assess the solution and price for your assignment, recommends Westrum.

At the same time, please let us know what documentation you need for delivery. Oceanize offers a receipt for received plastic and documentation of the processed quantity, which can be used as a basis for the company's reporting.
